Earthquakes and Plate Tectonics
With the advent of plate tectonics, it has become apparent that episodes of extreme geologic upheaval - like earthquakes - are much more than simply random events. From the series The Endless Voyage: Introduction to Oceanography. Copyright 2003. www.intelecom.org.

Chile Earthquake 2007 - What is an Earthquake
Strong earthquake shakes northern Chile, kills at least two SANTIAGO (AFP) — A strong earthquake measuring 7.7 rocked arid northern Chile Wednesday, killing at least two people, injuring others, sparking panic and causing power outages. Authorities said two women, one aged 88 and the other 54 died when they were crushed under collapsing walls in the city of Tocopilla, 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) north of Santiago, doctors said. Local authorities said at least 45 people were injured, but media reports put the figure at about 100. “It is a major quake,” Fernandez said of the temblor that struck at 12:43 pm (1543 GMT.) The epicenter was located 1260 kilometers (783 miles) north of the Chilean capital Santiago. It was felt as far away as Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, high in the Andes to the northeast. Images from Chile’s TVN television showed cars crushed by debris, and frightened people running onto the streets as the quake struck. Damage was also reported in the northern cities of Calama and Arica which lost electrical power. The government said a plane loaded with humanitarian aid was scheduled to fly to the affected area later in the day. The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale, which measures the amount of movement on the underground fault and the area of the fault that ruptured. Many seismologists now use that system rather than the Richter scale that measures an earthquake size based upon the amount of ground shaking. A …

Update on Earthquake Watch - AV-2010-04-04a
AV-2010-04-04 UPDATE ~12:47 UTC : An increase in x-ray activity due to the arrival of a CME from sunspot 1059 may reduce or nullify the indication represented by the coronal hole during calming solar periods. This factor may decrease the likelihood of the watch events as it represents interference in the time-space interaction between the coronal hole and the would-be seismic events.

Earthquake in Chile: Update #1
Tracy Reines, it’s Feb 27 noon ET. I’m speaking to you from the American Red Cross International Response Operation Center. Want to give you an update on what we know about the earthquake that hit Chile about 10 hours ago just outside of Santiago and Concepcion. www.redcross.org For inquiries about relatives living and who have citizenship in Chile, please try to keep calling them, monitor their social networking profiles or contact other family members who live nearby. Telephone, internet and other communication lines are often disrupted in times of disaster. Odds are about 1-in-3 that mega-earthquake will hit Pacific Northwest in next 50 years, scientists say
The major earthquakes that devastated Chile earlier this year and which triggered the catastrophic Indonesian tsunami of 2004 are more than just a distinct possibility to strike the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States, scientists say.

Earthquake Chile 8.8 Magnitude 27th 2nd 2010.
Chile Earthquake - Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Shook Chile - A massive earthquake shook central Chile on Saturday with an initial magnitude of 8.8. The quake struck at 0634 GMT about 91km (56 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 317km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Outgoing President Michelle Bachelet said that she had reports of six deaths so far and could not rule out that there might be more. The US issued an initial tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. That was later extended to Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica. Japans meteorological agency has warned of a potential tsunami across large areas of the Pacific. Aftershock President Bachelet called on people to remain calm and contact the authorities if they needed help. She said: The country has just experienced an enormous earthquake we are in the process of finding out about the effects of the quake across the region, the state of the roads and hospitals, the damage to buildings and of course the number of those killed and injured. Ms Bachelet, who has now gone into an emergency meeting, said that there were areas of the country where communications were down and teams were working to restore them. Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 35km. It recorded a 6.2 magnitude aftershock in the same area soon after at 0652 …

Earthquake Watch for Northern Hemisphere - AV-2010-04-04
Astrotometry Log April 4th, 2010 approximately 04:04 UTC Earthquake Watch thru April 12th, 2010 Weak solar x-ray emissions and Astrotometry of recent coronal disturbances indicate intense Northern Hemisphere seismic events the coming week. A severe seismic event with several strong aftershocks, is indicated in the northern hemisphere before April 12th 2010. The event may produce severe shaking through a broad latitude from 1 degree north latitude to 25 degrees north latitude plus or minus 10 degrees. The event maybe accompanied by a very strong event 30 additional degrees north plus or minus 10 degrees. The exact location of the events is unknown. Recent activity along the San Andreas fault and at the seams of the Philippine Plate indicates one of those regions as the most likely location. The shape of the coronal disturbances, however, seem to fit the features of the San Andreas fault. Analysis of activity in other coronal features indicates a possible tsunami in the northern reaches of the effected region. The most likely days for the event, are April 4th 5th and 6th. This experimental log is a service of the Cosabio Virtual Institute and is not suitable for emergency response. Emergency managers are encouraged to use all available data, including other earthquake indicators, in consideration of appropriate action. An annotated video version of this forecast will be available at: youtube.com Results of this watch will be annotated at the end of this video.
