    First update on the 8.8 magnitude massive Earthquake off the shore of Chile on 26.02.2010, including live reports and expert information both on the impact and the tsunami warnings in response to the event. Recorded from BBC World News on 26-27.02.2010 The quake struck at 0634 GMT (3:34 am local time) about 90km (56 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and about 320km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between about 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications following. The death-toll remains unclear but is confirmed to count at least 122 victims. Easter Island is beeing evacuated as a precautionary measure in expectation of a possible tsunami. The US issued an initial tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador, which was later extended to Colombia, Antarctica, Panama, Costa Rica and then as far as New Zealand and Hawaii.

    A tsunami warning has been issued for New Zealand and much of the Pacific following a massive earthqauke in Chile on Saturday evening, with waves set to hit New Zealand at around 7am Sunday. At least 78 people are dead following the 8.8 magnitude quake . Following the quake a tsunami warning was issued and a wave measuring 2.34 metres was measured in Talcahuano, Chile. Civil Defence predicts waves of between one and three metres for the east coast of both the North and South Islands with the Chatham Islands and Banks Peninsula expected to be first hit. The first wave to arrive in New Zealand will be in the areas around Chatham Islands at approximately 7.05am. Civil Defence says the first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Strong currents and unusual tidal effects may continue for several hours. Civil Defence acting director Alan Walker says waves will be biggest 6 to 12 hours after the first arrivals. He says Civil Defence are monitoring the situation and will be issuing regular updates. People in coastal areas should: 1. Stay off beaches 2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities) 3. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends 4. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates 5.
